I love Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks. I have lived here since 1993, raised my family here, and built a life in this community. Now I want to give something back to the place that has given so much to me. I am running for Thousand Oaks City Council because I believe we can plan for the future without losing the qualities that made so many of us want to live here in the first place.
We need housing, and our community will continue to grow. But growth needs to be thoughtful and balanced. Traffic, infrastructure, public safety, flooding, open space, neighborhood character, and the quality of life of existing residents all need to be part of the decisions we make.
I also believe residents deserve an independent voice at City Hall. Every major decision should be evaluated on its merits and on what is best for our community, not what is best for developers, special interests, or any particular organization.
My approach is simple: Protect. Plan. Prosper.
Protect our open spaces, parks, neighborhoods, public safety, and the quality of life that makes Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks special.
Plan thoughtfully for housing, transportation, infrastructure, and development. Residents should have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their neighborhoods.
Prosper supporting local businesses, maintaining responsible city finances, and making Thousand Oaks a community where families, businesses, and future generations can thrive.
I am not running to represent a special interest. I am running to represent the people who live here. I will listen, ask questions, study the facts, and make decisions based on what I believe is best for Newbury Park and the greater Thousand Oaks community.
Why I'm Running
Meet Karen
Karen Arreola has called Newbury Park home since 1993. For more than three decades, she has lived here, raised her family here, built her career here, and developed deep roots in the community she now hopes to represent on the Thousand Oaks City Council.
Karen spent her career in biotechnology, holding leadership positions with responsibility for people, operations, budgets, and complex organizations. Her work required careful analysis, collaboration, accountability, and the ability to solve difficult problems. She believes that experience will bring a valuable perspective to local government.
Karen later shared her professional experience as an adjunct lecturer of biotechnology at Moorpark College, helping prepare students for careers in a field that has played an important role in the Conejo Valley economy.
Karen is not a career politician. She is a longtime Newbury Park resident, mother, business leader, and educator who believes public service starts with listening to the people you represent.
Over the years, Karen has watched Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks grow and change. She values what generations of residents have built here: safe neighborhoods, beautiful parks and open spaces, excellent schools, a strong local economy, and an exceptional quality of life.
Karen believes those qualities should never be taken for granted.
She is running for Thousand Oaks City Council, District 1, to bring an independent, thoughtful, and practical voice to City Hall. She will put residents first, listen to their concerns, and consider not only the immediate effects of decisions, but the kind of community we will leave to future generations.
District 1
Thousand Oaks, District 1 includes much of Newbury Park. It is bounded by the 101 Freeway to the north and Ventu Park Road to the east.
